Mahindra & Mahindra, in partnership with Uno Minda, has launched a critical initiative to manufacture rare earth magnets in India. These magnets are vital for electric vehicle (EV) motors, defense systems, smartphones, and other high-end electronics.
China’s Export Ban Sparks Urgency
With nearly 90% of rare earth magnets sourced from China, the sudden export halt in April 2025 created global disruptions. India, still awaiting clearances, has now fast-tracked local production to reduce future risks and supply chain dependency.
Why This Mahindra–Uno Minda Partnership Matters
Mahindra’s recent electric SUV launches underline the urgent need for secure magnet supply. By joining hands with Uno Minda, a key auto component maker, the two firms aim to build a sustainable and strategic local production ecosystem.
Government Support and Industry Response
To boost this shift, the Indian government is reportedly planning incentives and subsidies. Mahindra has already engaged with the Ministry of Heavy Industries and shown interest in long-term supply agreements with domestic players.
When Will India Become Self-Sufficient?
According to sources, India may take 1–2 years to achieve full-scale rare earth magnet production. However, the initiative has already begun, setting the stage for a self-reliant EV and electronics industry.
